Trying to close a budget gap caused by $2.3 million in lost state aid, the Iroquois School Board spent much of its meeting Monday looking at economies, such as closing the high school pool permanently and increasing fees to nonschool groups using district facilities.

Superintendent Neil Rochelle said that in addition to an effort to obtain feedback on possible cost-cutting ideas from the staff, the district is considering tapping into reserve accounts. Douglas Scofield, assistant superintendent of finance and personnel, gave board members a description of the various reserve accounts as well as rules associated with them to determine what can and cannot be used.

Certain accounts such as the repair reserve or the workers’ compensation reserve account cannot be tapped into for purposes beyond what they’re specified for, Scofield said.

The board again discussed the future of the high school pool, already closed because of previous budget cuts, and agreed to revisit the issue again in six months, when costs to permanently close the pool may be provided.

The board also discussed its policy of waiving use fees for some groups that use district facilities either for summer camp or classes.
