Bogucki ends tenure of 32 years on Wales Town Board
Updated: August 21, 2010, 3:53 AM
The Wales Town Board on Tuesday night said goodbye to Edmund Bogucki, who compiled 32 years of service on the board — the longest of any town board member in Erie County.
But the salutations didn’t come until after the board voted, 3-2, in favor of Bogucki’s proposal to shrink the Planning Board from seven members to five. Councilmen Michael Simon and Donald Butcher voted against the plan.
Bogucki said that downsizing the Planning Board makes it more proportional to other boards in the town, including the Zoning Board of Appeals and Conservation Advisory Board and that the Planning Board would function just as well with five members.
However, he said he is against the movement to downsize town boards from five members to three.
The Planning Board change becomes effective at the expiration of the next two terms, which will not be filled.
Bogucki is considered the dean of board members in all of Erie County’s 25 towns, serving consecutive terms dating back to the era of disco in 1977.
He began serving on the board five supervisors ago and is responsible for initiating the first Memorial Day parade in town. He also has served for years as liaison on the Elma, Marilla and Wales Sports Board, which he helped to organize 38 years ago.
Bogucki also is a senior commander for Mark Rademacher Post 7795, Veterans of Foreign Wars, and a member of Wales Kiwanis Club, which he helped organize in 1977.
A Navy veteran, Bogucki is a former state trooper and a successful businessman.
The board presented Bogucki, whose nickname is “Bud,” a proclamation, chocolate cake and . . . a case of Bud Lite.
Bogucki and his wife of 55 years, Arlene, have three grown children and four grandchildren.
In other matters:
Erie County Sheriff Timothy Howard, a Wales resident, swore in eight town officials: David Lane, Board of Assessors; Michael Zywar, highway superintendent; Mindy Eaton, tax collector; Sharon Marfurt, town clerk; John Sly, assessor; Ricky Venditti, supervisor; and Councilmen Gerald Klinck and Jude Hatrich.
The board approved paying dog control officer Walter Raichel, who is scheduled to retire Thursday, $15 an hour to handle current litigation involving dogs.
