‘Clean coal’ plant bypassed for federal funding
Updated: August 21, 2010, 3:31 AM
A proposed “clean coal” plant in Jamestown suffered another setback Friday when it wasn’t included among three projects the Department of Energy announced would receive more than $3 billion in funding.
The proposed plant had already suffered a major blow this summer, when the project’s principal corporate backer, Praxair, shifted its support from the Jamestown project to one in Holland, Mich.
“This is the culmination of a successful, four-year battle against an unneeded coal plant waged by more than 20 local, state and national environmental groups,” said Walter Simpson, coalition leader of Clean Energy for Jamestown.
The group has called for cleaner and less expensive alternatives.
“The U. S. Department of Energy got it right. This project did not deserve federal funding,” Simpson said.
The Jamestown Board of Public Utilities and Sen. Charles E. Schumer, a backer of the project, released statements criticizing the decision.
