DELEVAN — Cattaraugus County sheriff’s investigators said they are searching for a person they want to question in the slaying of an elderly man in his Delevan Terrace Apartments home.

Wilbur Norton, 80, was found dead shortly before noon Tuesday by a Meals on Wheels delivery person who summoned help from the Delevan Rescue Squad, which alerted the Sheriff’s Office.

Cattaraugus County Coroner Cleon W. Easton III, of Franklinville, said an autopsy was performed Wednesday in Erie County Medical Center, where the ruling of homicide was made.

He declined further details, deferring to the Sheriff’s Office.

Acting Sheriff Timothy Whitcomb, who just returned to the area after a several days in Albany, added, “Until I get back and meet with my staff and learn what plan we are taking, I’m not releasing any more details.”

Acting Undersheriff William Nichols and Chief Investigator Robert Yehl have been coordinating the investigation in Whitcomb’s absence.

“We’ll be completing several priority interviews [today],” Whitcomb said. “Our priority is to hold somebody accountable.”

Several investigators will be conducting interviews today, Whitcomb added.

District Attorney Edward M. Sharkey, who also declined to release details of the case, would only say, “I understand [authorities] are out there looking for somebody.”
