Chautauqua County sheriff’s deputies have arrested two young Amish men for allegedly vandalizing two Amish businesses in the Clymer area on Halloween.

Rudy E. Yoder, 20, and Marty S. Troyer, 18, were charged Thursday with third-degree burglary and second-degree criminal mischief, both felonies. They also were charged with fourth-degree criminal mischief, a misdemeanor.

The two are accused of causing damage to Eastern Estates Metal Roofing, an Amish business on Route 474 in North Clymer, during the early morning hours of Oct. 31, sheriff’s officials said.

They left that location and went to another Amish business on Clymer Hill Road, where they caused several thousand dollars in additional damage, sheriff’s officials allege.

Yoder and Troyer are accused of using a knife to destroy several bags of horse feed, horse harnesses and pads.

They also damaged three Amish buggies inside the barn and opened a large diesel fuel tank, causing 260 gallons of fuel to spill onto the ground, sheriff’s officials said.

“It’s unusual that we get involved in a criminal investigation involving the Amish at all,” said Sheriff Joseph A. Gerace. “But with 260 gallons of diesel fuel on the ground, it became a huge environmental issue.”

The state Department of Environmental Conservation was called, and gravel saturated with diesel fuel was removed.

“It’s very expensive cleaning up that amount of damage,” Gerace said.

Gerace blamed Halloween vandalism as a motive for the damage but said investigators are looking into the possibility of a disagreement among some Amish youth as a contributing factor.

“It’s a very isolated incident,” Gerace said.
