FREDONIA — Fredonia’s fire hall may need repairs totaling $176,000, according to an estimate by the Buffalo engineering firm of Nussbaumer & Clarke that was reviewed Monday night by the Village Board.

The building’s hose tower was among the items the firm said need renovation work, as well as the building’s exterior stucco and areas of rusty structural steel. The board decided to investigate municipal grants that might help the village pay for these expenses. No action was taken.

John Monaco, the village’s chief code enforcement officer, and Village Attorney Sam Drayo are working together on a proposed local law that would create a village registry of rental dwellings and units. If a village rental property owner resides out of the area, the owner would be asked to assign a local designee with whom Monaco could communicate regarding code violations and other such matters. Drayo said the proposed law’s framework has been started, but there is work to do before it will be presented to the board for review.

The board has asked Mayor Michael Sullivan to get a clear understanding of the board’s position prior to speaking publicly about an issue. Recently the mayor spoke out against a proposal by the Chautauqua County Legislature to partially fund, but perhaps not permanently fund, the salaries of municipal police officers who participate in the county’s drug task force.

Trustees Joseph Cerrie, Adam Brown and Susan Mackay all said Monday night that the mayor did not reflect their opinions on the issue of county task force funding. They would have liked to know what the Legislature might contribute to local municipalities before agreeing or disagreeing. The county’s proposal reportedly was for each municipality involved in the task force to receive $20,000 to help fund an officer’s salary.

The bottom line, the mayor said, is that he still feels, and he felt the board agreed, that the county should spread the cost of the drug task force countywide, not just help fund a portion of the salaries for task force police officers who work for individual municipalities.
