Rebidding planned on harbor work
Updated: August 21, 2010, 3:03 AM
SILVER CREEK — Silver Creek officials will ask contractors to take a second look at the specifications to dredge sludge from the community’s harbor.
Officials hope that removing the sludge and debris will prevent flooding like the Aug. 9 disaster that caused millions of dollars damage to the village.
During a special meeting Thursday, Village Board members agreed that the bidders may have been confused about the needs of the project.
Mayor Kurt Lindstrom noted there are three gravel bars that need to be removed and some 37,000 cubic yards of gravel need to be taken from the waterway and placed on the south side of the creek.
Lindstrom said the permits from the state Department of Environmental Conservation will allow the work to continue until the end of the year. New bids will be opened at a special meeting Thursday.
In another matter related to flooding, the mayor received permission to sign a six-month lease on the former George Bentges Distributing Co. warehouse and property on Routes 5 & 20 to house streets department and public works equipment.
The mayor said the $27,000 agreement will give village officials time to decide whether to rebuild on the current public works site or to look for an alternate location. The public works buildings were badly damaged in the August flooding and have been condemned.
