BATAVIA — Republicans scored a clean sweep Tuesday, capturing all five major contests, regaining control of the City Council and maintaining an 8-1 majority in the Genesee County Legislature.

Incumbent at-large Council members Timothy E. Buckley and Frank C. Ferrando won easily, as did 2nd Ward Council member Marianne Clattenburg, in her bid for an at-large seat. The prize is the Council presidency — an office restricted to at-large members on the nine-member Council. Republicans will maintain a 5-4 majority on the Council because the the city Republican Committee will chose a ward successor to Clattenburg.

In what was predicted to be a close a race, Robert J. Radley beat City Councilwoman Rose Mary Christian for a seat on the Genesee County Legislature.

Radley polled a 510 votes, defeating Christian, 361 votes, to win the seat representing Wards 1 and 6 on the County Legislature. Christian, an 18-year veteran of the City Council, is midway through a four-year term.

In city Wards 2 and 3, Hollis D. Upson won another term on the Legislature, defeating Christopher M. Charvella, 424-235.

The sole Democrat on the Legislature is the city’s third representative, Edward DeJaneiro Jr., who was not challenged.

Voters also gave a wide margin of approval to a revised City Charter.
