The first woman to drive an automobile across the continent, 100 years ago, and one who retraced the journey this spring will be among six people inducted Oct. 23 into Buffalo’s new National Transportation Women’s Hall of Fame.

Alice Ramsey will be honored posthumously for completing the rugged trip from New York City to San Francisco, via Buffalo, behind the wheel of a Maxwell in 1909. Emily Anderson, of Seattle, will be honored for following in Ramsey’s tire tracks in a century-old Maxwell this June to celebrate the centennial of Ramsey’s achievement.

Other inductees are: Lauren Fix of Clarence, a nationally known car care expert and professional racer; Marguerite Hambleton of Buffalo, president of AAA New York State and former president of the Automobile Club of Western and Central New York; Donna Luh of Depew, a Thruway Authority board member and former Buffalo Niagara International Airport project coordinator; and Mary Martino of Buffalo, an Automobile Club board member and former Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority commissioner.

Mary Ann Sandoro and Carol Fatta will be co-chairwomen of the event in the Buffalo Transportation/Pierce-Arrow Museum at Seneca Street and Michigan Avenue. It will begin with cocktails and an auction at 6 p. m. followed by a buffet dinner at 7 and the installation at 8.

Admission will be a $175 donation to the nonprofit museum. Proceeds will go toward an expansion now under way that will include the Women’s Hall of Fame and construction of a gas station that Frank Lloyd Wright designed for Buffalo in the 1940s.

Call 853-0084 by next Monday for reservations.
