LITTLE VALLEY — Independence Party voters will be the only ones going to the polls Tuesday in Cattaraugus County in a countywide vote for district attorney during primary elections.

District Attorney Edward M. Sharkey’s name will be the only one on the ballot. But supporters of Lori Rieman, of Machias, a Republican, are asking Independence Party voters to write in her name so that she can win the party line on the ballot over Sharkey, of Olean, a Democrat.

Rieman, a former assistant to Sharkey, was fired by him earlier this year when she announced her intention to run against him.

Elsewhere in the county, voters will be out in the cities of Salamanca and Olean and in several towns. Polls will be open from noon to 9 p. m., and results will be tabulated by the county Board of Elections.

In the City of Olean, Republican Mayor David J. Carucci is challenged by William J. Aiello for the GOP ballot line. Independence Party voters will choose Linda L. Witte or write in another name. Both Aiello and Witte are county legislators.

In the City of Salamanca, Democrats and Republicans will go to the polls in all five city wards to choose mayoral candidates.

Vying in both the Democratic and Republican primaries are Mayor Jeffrey L. Pond Sr., who has the endorsement of both parties, and former Mayor Carmen A. Vecchiarella, who is a county legislator.

In Ward 1, Democrat incumbent Harold R. Kahm faces Ronald S. Ball for backing as alderman.

In Ward 2, Democrats Gerri J. Johnson and Curtis J. Smith face each other for the Democratic line for alderman.

In Ward 3, Democrats will vote between Alderman Roger W. Bailey and challenger Susan L. Metzler. Republicans will vote for incumbent Bailey or challenger Corey E. James.

In Ward 4, Democrats will choose between Alderman Michael R. Smith and challenger Casimir M. Myers.

In Ward 5, Democrats will select Alderman Edward J. Riley or challenger Kevin M. Hill.

In town races, two Republican councilmen will be selected as voters choose between incumbent Robert L. Scharf and John D. Northrup and Dennis M. Abriatis in Ellicottville.

In Freedom, candidates for justice on the Republican line are Joseph M. Pawlowski and Gary P. Chamberlain.

In Hinsdale, both Conservative and Independence voters must choose one candidate each between Jennifer Witzigman and Linda J. Lovell in the race for town justice. Republicans will vote for highway superintendent. The candidates are incumbent Gregory T. Church and Ronald D. Brown.

In Otto, three are vying for Republican backing for highway superintendent. They are King A. Wulf, Dale

A. Brown and Robert J. Barber.

In Perrysburg, two Republican board members will be chosen. Running are incumbents Lynn W. Varney and Richard M. Gabel, challenged by Constance M. Johnson.

In the Town of Salamanca, Republican Clerk Virginia P. Rider faces JoElla M. Emborsky for the GOP line.
