Grand opening triggers discussion
Updated: August 21, 2010, 1:42 AM
DUNKIRK — Plans for the grand opening of a new addition to a Dunkirk business triggered some discussion during a meeting of the Dunkirk Common Council on Tuesday.
James Payne, the owner of Walleye Willie’s, asked for permission to have a grand opening event for his new concession area in a parking lot next to his Route 5 business. He listed three possible weekends in September.
City Police Chief David Ortolano urged the board to table the motion pending final inspection from city zoning and planning officials. Council members thought otherwise and granted the motion, subject to approval from the building code offices. They said Payne was issued a letter in March stipulating the improvements that must be made to the new addition.
In other matters, the Council:
Approved a bid for cold milling and asphalt from H. Olson and Sons of Forestville. The bid of $64,550 was the only proposal on the project.
Granted approval to Dunkirk High School cheerleaders to collect money at various intersections Sept. 12.
Gave permission to the Vietnam Veterans of America to sell poppies Sept. 18-20 as a fundraiser.
Is entertaining a request for extra police coverage for Dunkirk High School football games Friday and Sept. 18 and 25 and Oct. 16.
