NIAGARA-ON-THE-LAKE, Ont.—A labor dispute has brought the Shaw Festival to a standstill three weeks before the scheduled season-opening performances.

After management of the renowned company Wednesday locked out 16 union facilities employees who sought assurances that their work would not be turned over to an outside contractor, another 150 unionized production and ticket sales workers went on strike.

The International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees said it will set up picket lines at Shaw Festival sites. It is the first work stoppage in the Shaw Festival’s 49-year history.
