Group puts Falls on list of most ‘playful cities’
Updated: August 20, 2010, 6:40 AM
NIAGARA FALLS—The City of Niagara Falls, which has received a grant from the New York State Environmental Protection Fund to inventory all of its local parks, create a master plan for their improvement and develop a system of trails linking the parks with the Niagara River waterfront, has been chosen as one of America’s most “playful cities.”
The choice was announced Wednesday by KaBOOM!,a national nonprofit organization headquartered in Washington, D. C., and dedicated to giving priority to playful activities and ensuring that children are healthy by providing the time and space for them to play.
KaBOOM’s announcement said the organization makes children happier and healthier by inspiring communities to create great places to play within walking distance of each child.
“An extreme misconception exists that play among children is a luxury when, in fact, it’s an absolute necessity,” said Darell Hammond, co-founder and chief executive officer of KaBOOM!.
Niagara Falls is one of 118 cities throughout the nation designated this year as “playful cities.” The only other city so designated in New York State is New York City.
