TOWN OF NIAGARA—Like most municipalities and public agencies in New York State, the Town of Niagara soon will decide whether to offer an early retirement incentive to some of its employees as a cost-cutting measure.

Town Supervisor Steven C. Richards told members of the Town Board on Tuesday that five town employees “have expressed an interest” in the plan if it is adopted. He said the board would decide next month on whether to offer the incentive.

The plan would increase pension benefits for eligible employees who agree to retire now instead of continuing to work until their normal retirement dates. The town would save money by leaving the vacated positions unfilled or by filling them with employees at lower salaries than those who would retire.
