Play-Doh ‘fish fry’ catches big prize
Updated: August 21, 2010, 2:54 AM
RANSOMVILLE — Since her “fish fry” dinner was made of Play- Doh, 8-year-old Teagan Clark will just have to savor the taste of victory instead.
Competing against nine other finalists, Teagan, a third-grader at W. H. Stevenson Elementary School in Ransomville, has won $10,000 in the nationwide “Ready, Go, Play-Doh” contest.
Her putty-based version of a fish filet, lemon wedge, green beans and a cheesy baked potato won the most votes over two weeks. As the winner, she will get $5,000 for herself and $5,000 for her school in the Wilson Central School District.
Competing entries from around the country included pasta salad, tacos, a slice of cake, sushi and “ants on a log,” or celery sticks with peanut butter and raisins. Teagan was the only finalist selected from New York.
Teagan’s parents plan to put away her share of the $5,000 for college but will let Teagan get some fun things, too.
First on her list?
“She wants a bead curtain for her bedroom, like the ones from the ’70s,” her mother, Lynn Clark, said Thursday. “I’m not sure how she thought of that, but that’s what she asked for.”
W. H. Stevenson Principal Michael Cancilla said Teagan will help decide how the school’s $5,000 will be spent.
“We’re going to meet to get an idea of what Teagan thinks might be a neat way to spend this money,” he said.
The good news arrived by mail Thursday while Teagan was at school. Her mother thanked the community for the support that led Teagan to victory, which was based on Internet voting.
“It started as a fun little thing for Teagan, making little food items from Play-Doh,” Clark said. “It really just snowballed, and the community got behind her. The school, her friends and our neighborhood — I can’t believe the support she got.”
