NIAGARA FALLS—An armed robbery at a 19th Street convenience store was thwarted late Tuesday when the clerk grabbed what turned out to be a toy gun from the would-be robber.

House in Burt damaged by chimney fire

BURT—A chimney fire damaged a house on Coomer Road just after 11 a.m. Tuesday. Homeowner Robert Boyer, of 1868 Coomer Road, said he had placed wood in his fireplace at 9:30 a.m., then left the house at 11:22 a.m. to get his daughter from the school bus. While he was outside, he noticed smoke coming from the chimney.

LOCKPORT—City investigators said Wednesday they are looking for help in apprehending three people involved in an attempted theft Saturday at a Main Street jewelry store.

Man reports threats, shot fired at house

NIAGARA FALLS—An Ashland Avenue man told police someone shot at his house and threatened him at 8 p.m. Tuesday. The man said he was eating and drinking beer with some friends when a woman in the group jumped on him and started hitting him in the face. He said after she left, five men came to the house and started yelling, knocking on his door and challenging him to fight, then left.

Ontario official elected bridge commission chairman

LEWISTON—Michael J. Goodale of Grimsby, Ont., assistant deputy minister of the corporate services division and chief administrative officer for the Ontario Ministry of Transportation, has been elected to a one-year term as chairman of the eight-member Niagara Falls Bridge Commission.

Pickup driver ticketed after hitting county truck

PENDLETON—A North Tonawanda man was slightly injured and cited for driving with an obstructed view after his pickup truck struck the rear of a parked Niagara County dump truck while its crew was filling potholes on Bear Ridge Road at about 9 a.m. Wednesday.

Woman accused of speeding under the influence of drugs

CAMBRIA—A Lockport woman has been accused of driving 85 mph on a 55-mph road while under the influence of drugs after being stopped by Niagara County sheriff’s deputies just after 1 p.m. Tuesday on Cambria-Lockport Townline Road.

Council approves CSEA contract granting raises

NORTH TONAWANDA — The Common Council on Tuesday unanimously approved a long-negotiated Civil Service Employees Association contract, which will grant raises totaling 6.25 percent over four years and remove a requirement that the city preserve staff in the water and waste water departments.
