LOCKPORT—The city has received two state grants for housing programs totaling $700,000, Community Development Director William J. Evert told the Common Council on Wednesday.

The city received $400,000 for its first-time homebuyer program, which allows it to make loans of up to $19,000 to people buying their first home if it’s in the city and the applicants meet income eligibility requirements. Evert said the loan doesn’t have to be paid back if the recipient lives in the house for seven years.

Similar rules are used for a low-income home-repair program for which the city received a$300,000 grant. The maximum payment to a homeowner is $18,400. Half is an outright grant, the rest is a loan that becomes a grant after five years.
