Referendum set Sept. 23 on shrinking Town Board
Updated: August 20, 2010, 6:41 AM
Grand Island residents will decide next month whether to become the sixth town in Erie County to shrink the size of their Town Board from five to three members.
The Town Board on Monday decided to hold the referendum Sept. 23.
Kevin Gaughan, who has been leading the effort to reduce the size of town boards and eliminate village governments, said his volunteers collected more than 1,000 signatures from residents to force the vote.
If Grand Islanders approve, they would join residents in Alden, Evans, Hamburg, Orchard Park and West Seneca in deciding to downsize their local government.
Voters in the villages of Williamsville and Sloan turned down dissolution measures by wide margins in balloting Tuesday.
