Eight new city fire trucks dedicated Sunday morning had Mayor Byron W. Brown’s name emblazoned on the side below the city seal.

After some blowback from upset members of the firefighters union, the mayor’s name is being removed.

“We thought it was in bad taste that the mayor would have his name on the rig,” Thomas P. Barrett, vice president of the union, said Tuesday. “Historically, with the Fire Department, the only names that go on the rig are [those of] the members who sacrifice their lives for the citizens of Buffalo.”

The new trucks were dedicated during the memorial ceremony for the 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, which was held at the Central Wharf.

Michael J. DeGeorge, Brown’s spokesman, said the mayor made the decision to have his name removed Monday night after hearing concerns about it Monday afternoon.

The Public Works Department is designing a new decal that “should be placed on the trucks in the next day or so,” DeGeorge said Tuesday.

The new equipment consists of six engines and two ladder trucks, Barrett said.

Add to the list of politiicians that should by statute be barred from putting their names on things (including stationary) the Governor and all those State commisioners, senators and what have you.

There are many Narcissus' in politics. Self importance seems to be taking priority to other more important issues. Mayor Brown should consider plastering his name on those dilapidated neighborhoods, instead of on equipment use to protect the public.
Way, maybe he was just beating those businessess that proposed to make these public equipments traveling advertising billboards for their products. Could that be the case?. Just speculating.

Byron Brown should have put his name on the doors of One Sunset. Why insult the hard working sanitation crews?

SEAN CROWLEY, EDEN, NY on Wed Sep 14, 2011 at 12:21 PM

Why do these politicians even try to get this stuff through. Its just is small and petty and takes away from more important things. If Byron wants to put his name on something why isn't it ever a garbage truck? Just not as prestigious enough.

If the Mayor would have appointed someone with a fire fighting background this never would have happened. Any other Fire Com. Would have told his boss that putting your name on fire trucks is not appropriate.. But not this Com. He was. To busy telling the Mayor how nice his name looked on the doors of the rigs. Yes Mayor , your suit looks nice, yes Mayor, you looked nice on TV Mayor. How long before Casey makes FF Com. Whitfield an X Com. Of Fire. Buffalo Fire stay safe.

The mayors' name doesn't belong on ANYTHING! He is an "employee" of the people of the city of Buffalo, and won't be mayor forever. Nobody needs to see his name on public owned buildings, signs or places. This goes for all mayors and county executives and "authority" managers. What it costs to do such things, and re-do every election season, etc., is criminal. The hubris of getting your name on everything possible...ridiculous.
