Collins keeps grabbing, but we just watch

First, Chris Collins came for the inner- city medical clinics, claiming that the health of poor people is not the county’s business.
He dumped programs at the Jesse E. Nash Health Care Center on William Street and the Dr. Matt Gajewski Center on Broadway, even though state grants and patient fees covered most of the bill.
The Legislature tried to thwart him, to no avail. Primary care has ended at both sites, with Gajewski about to be shuttered and Nash offering only a few ancillary services.
And we did not speak out because we have health insurance and don’t need public clinics.
Then he came for the impoverished day care mothers, slashing their subsidies for child care while they work to lift themselves out of poverty.
He kicked hundreds of children out of the program, with some parents warning that, without this help to take care of their kids, they would be forced to quit work and go on welfare. Those lucky enough to find relatives to watch their tykes nevertheless were forced to forgo the enrichment activities available in well-run day care, activities that can give their kids an educational boost.
And we did not speak out because we are not poor and don’t need day care assistance to keep our jobs or help our children.
Then he came for any county lawmakers who balked at such moves. Claiming to be a nonpolitician, he tried to wipe out any semblance of checks and balances and co-opt a separate branch of government by running his own candidates to take over the Legislature.
And we did not speak out because . . . well . . . that’s politics, and we don’t have time for that.
Then he came for the county comptroller, gutting his 2011 budget and dismantling his auditing staff because he doesn’t like being criticized and doesn’t want anyone keeping tabs on how he’s ruining the rest of county government.
And we did not speak out because we don’t rely on county departments, so it doesn’t matter if there’s someone making sure the bureaucracy operates as it should. We did not speak out because, to be honest, we don’t pay much attention to government at all.
Then he came for the cultural agencies, cutting the small ones completely out of his 2011 budget, after demanding that the big ones sign contracts giving him a death grip on their operations and artistic freedom.
And we did not speak out because we are not cultural officials. We did not speak out because we only go to the movies and don’t care about being a vibrant, intellectually stimulating community. We did not speak out because it’s enough to have just a handful of major institutions forced to market to the lowest common denominator, because that’s running government like a business.
Then he came for the libraries, cutting $4 million from the system’s budget and forcing reduced hours even though usage is up in a down economy. Reduced hours next year will mean reduced access to all that the libraries offer.
And we did not speak out because our kids read e-books and research school assignments from their bedroom computers. We did not speak out because we go to Barnes&Noble for the latest releases. We did not speak out because we don’t need the libraries’ free job-search services.
And then he came for the $74 million reserve fund the county is sitting on. And there was no one left to speak out and say the obvious: that in Chris Collins’ world, this money is to run for re-election on next year, not to serve people.

But since you've opened that door let me add that this President has accomplished more in 2 years than most Presidents do in a lifetime, let alone 8 years in the White House. Health care - what specific part of the legislation do you oppose: elimination of annual or lifetime caps, no cancellation due to pre-existing conditions, free screening/preventive care as part of each plan, children covered on parent's plan until age 26, financial incentives for electronic medical records management? Or do you oppose the provisions that would have helped reduce premium costs, such as the public option, that were dropped because they were demonized as socialist by the far right? Our government regulates the health care system - it doesn't operate it.
I can list many additional successes of this President, but here's just one - last year we had one factory in the U.S. producing electric car batteries; next year we may have as many as 30 such factories. That is a direct result of the Stimulus bill. This administration is literally reinventing the American economy, but it will be 10 - 20 years before everyone (including the morons on Fox News) fully realizes it. In the meantime, our multi-national companies have learned that through both technology & globalization that they can be just as productive with far fewer workers. That's part of the reason why unemployment is still high - many companies are highly profitable again but they don't need to hire everyone back. That's why education is so important, so we can compete in a global economy.
Mr. Watson constantly advocates for huge government which will tell us what to do, including give our hard earned dollars to those who don't bother to go out and attempt to improve themselves and their living conditions.
I am not advocating for people to live in wretched conditions, just the opposite, but I think they should at least make an effort, and not depend on the rest of us to do it for them - entitlement is the word that comes to mind.
Mr. Obama wants everyone to have everything, and, in a perfect world that would be great, but this is not a perfect world. Someone has to pay for it and that someone is me and, most probably, you. You dragged yourself up by your bootstraps and made a life for yourself and your family. If I'm wrong - I'm wrong, but you don't strike me as a man who laid about with your hand out. My parents and grandparents weren't either. It was tough to make a 6 year old go to the railroad tracks and fill her bucket with coal from the trains to heat the house before she could go to school - but my Grandmother made my Mother and her twin do just that - and my Mother received her MBA from UB in 1947. Not a small accomplishment for a woman in that era. My brother and I received as much help as my parents were able to provide for our undergraduate degrees, but when it came to Law School and Med School, we were on our own. EARNING those educations was hard, but we did it on our own and are still paying back our student loans.
Don't get me started on my health insurance rates.

I was born in the depression and knew deprivation, but a series of Norman Rockwell posters always seemed to be places I was. They showed FDRs announcement of the four freedoms that all Americans should enjoy:
Freedom of Speech and Expression
Freedom of Worship
Freedom From Want
Freedom from Fear
I grew up with that as my idea of the role of government . Mainly to ensure the four freedoms. Its like air and water they are a public trust we the people have a rights to government guarantees those things that we as individuals cant do alone or even as small collectives.
When the nation had 13 states and a couple million people small government worked. We had decided that constitutional government that works fine here.
But now with over 200 million people and some ideologues and technocrats think that the rise in government role and size is response is simply Big Government. It isnt it is what you get with huge numbers of people. But we could use some better management
Watson points out the weakness of removing government support to the many needs of our society. We remove freedom when we force people to live wretched lives. We remove freedom when we deny learning we remove freedom when sickness goes untreated and children hunger.
People had better start to listen to the wisdom of Watson rather than prattle on like talking heads and European royalty that bid them have cake if they dont have bread.

Don't forget that most of the Welfare outlays are State Mandates? It's NOT Collins - it's New York State that demands that layabouts have the highest benefits of any State in the Nation? Better Healthcare than most middle-class Americans who pay a LOT of taxes to the County and the State of New York are able to pay for themselves? Don't forget that most of the people in Albany are Democrats, Rod.
Collins isn't Adolf Hitler, Rod... You can't make that comparison - it doesn't work with educated Americans who know that "...they didn't come for me so I didn't care..."(sic) was written by a Lutheran (I think) Minister in Germany who wound up dying in a Concentration Camp during the War. They DID come for him, eventually, and he was murdered during the closing days of the War. Nice try. Didn't work.

Our community has enjoyed a growing arts scene in the past few decades making Buffalo among the top 10 cities to relocate according to a CNN report, but that little piece of good news is jeopardized by crippling cuts. Maybe those who do not understand how supporting quality of life issues makes a stronger, richer community should get out more.
I can't imagine the path my life would have taken had there not been a library where I read my first book outside of a school reader, or an accessible arts center broadening my parochial ideas into seeing all the possibilities of a well-served and well- shared life.
I am a home owner and I pay taxes and I worry, too, about rate increases, but still, I want my money re -invested in the community I live.
Thanks Mr. Watson for putting it out there with your usual impeccable prose.

This state provides more "stuff" to people than most others in the nation, while the middle class suffers for it.
Sorry, but Collins is right. Things need to be cut. Mommy and Daddy (the middle class) can't afford to keep supporting the children (lower and upper class).
Sorry that you feel the pain, but ignorance, dumb voting, and squandering of tax dollars by politicians caused this problem. The only way to solve it now is to bring in tons of business to support the economy, which will never happen in a state as socialist as NY...so, you have to resort to the other option, which is cutting expenses to live within your means.
Stop being greedy. It's annoying.

Typical Republican, Collins, with his "screw the workers" mantra (since Lincoln, who freed the slaves to depress the price of labor for his precious railroads). If you can't afford to go to Broadway to a play, the hell with you. If you can't afford a good book, don't depend on me for library help. If you'd like to raise your kids well while holding a job, well, good luck with that. Find a relative.

Guess how Collins got Erie County to become fiscally solvent? By using the stimulus money provided by the President.
And unless the people have taken over the government and corporations and are now in control of the means of production, we don't have a socialist government.
