Beer, and lots of it, is on tap tonight at HSBC Arena. That's not entirely unusual for events held inside the arena but more than 100 craft brews will be available to sample at the 2010 Buffalo BrewFest. It's a fundraiser for the Buffalo Hearing & Speech Center that is scheduled from 5 to 9 p.m. and is expected to attract about 3,500 revelers. Brewers will set up across two full floors in the HSBC Arena atrium and outside in the pavilion and courtyard of the arena. Food also will be available from a menu specially prepared for the event featuring beer-inspired items. Buffalo-based "Black Widow Band" will provide live musical entertainment. Prepaid tickets were $25 presale, but are $35 if purchased today. They are available at the HSBC Arena box office. The admission price includes a souvenir sampling glass and 20 tickets to taste from among the various brews that will be available at the event.

The farmers market operated by Erie County Medical Center gets a new permanent home today. The dedication of that new location will take place at 10:30 a.m. east of Grider Street, between Kensington and East Delavan avenues. The market will be adjacent to the Ephesus Ministries and former Catholic Charities buildings. Mayor Byron Brown is expected to be among those who attend the grand opening. The ECMC Farmers Market is intended to give residents in the surrounding neighborhood improved access to fresh food as part of the hospital's quest to promote healthy lifestyles and provide information on health and wellness. Planned activities include music, Tai Chi demonstrations at noon and a bicycle give-away for preselected community residents at 1 p.m. The farmers market was previously located in the ECMC Visitor Parking Lot "A," in front of the main ECMC entrance, nearer to Grider Street.

A Polish girls' choir will make an appearance today in "Old Polonia" on Buffalo's East Side to perform at Corpus Christi Catholic Church, 199 Clark St. The five-member group of girls 10 to 15 years old is called Ychtis, the Greek word for fish. The group specializes in sacred songs. Included in their repertoire is music based on the poetry of the late Father Jan Twardowski, one of Poland's beloved poets. The girls sing in Polish and in English. They also tap-dance. Based in the Polish city of Katowice in the industrial region of Silesia, Ychtis was formed 15 years ago with a mission to give young people from challenging family backgrounds the opportunity to develop and display their singing and dancing talents. Ychtis has appeared on Polish television and toured throughout Europe and cities in North America, including Chicago, Cleveland and Newark. Admission is free but a donation will be requested at the end of the show to help offset the group's expenses.

There's a party in Buffalo's Lovejoy neighborhood tonight, to celebrate both the 10th anniversary of the Iron Island Museum and the 125th anniversary of the former Methodist Episcopal Church Building, which now houses the museum at 998 Lovejoy St. It was built as a church in 1885 and was transformed into a funeral home in the 1950s, according to Marge Thielman Hastreiter, founder of the Iron Island Preservation Society. In 2000, funeral home operator Anthony Amigone donated the building to the society. It has since gained a national reputation as a site of alleged paranormal activity. In other words, some insist that it is haunted. Tonight's celebration starts at 6 p.m. and ends at 10. Tickets, which had to be purchased by July 22, were $25 each. The festivities offerings include hors d'oeurves, wine, beer, pop, coffee, tea and dessert.

The scholarship, established through the Erie Community College Foundation, is awarded to a high school graduate enrolled in ECC's Criminal Justice/Law Enforcement Program, or who is currently enrolled at the college.
