Brian Biggie is hoping Democrats, not just Republicans, are unhappy with the “corruption and dysfunction” in state government.

The Buffalo Republican also hopes Democrats pin some of the blame on their man in Albany—Assemblyman Sam Hoyt.

“This is a unique year,” said Biggie in announcing his campaign for Hoyt’s seat. “The Democrats are not a united party.”

Biggie, a North Buffalo resident and downtown lawyer, will need the backing of Democrats to beat the 18-year Assembly veteran. Democrats hold a 3-to-1 edge in enrollment in his district.

With friends and family standing behind him and Erie County Republican Chairman Nicholas A. Langworthy at his side, Biggie announced his candidacy Wednesday in Delaware Park.

“I’ve lost faith in the will and ability of our representatives to do what’s right,” Biggie told reporters.

He described Hoyt as a foot soldier for Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver and suggested Hoyt’s Democratic primary opponent, Common Council Member Joseph Golombek Jr., is no better.

“He’s just a new recruit,” the Kenmore native and Buffalo State College graduate said of Golombek.

Biggie, who may be best known for his role in organizing a Christmas gift-giving campaign for underprivileged kids, said Hoyt has put his political ambitions ahead of the needs of his constituents.

When asked how, the Republican referred to Hoyt’s record of increasing taxes and spending, a record he promised to reverse if elected.

“We will send a message,” he said, “that we’re sick of Albany’s incompetence.”

The 144th Assembly District that Biggie is seeking to represent is made up of Grand Island and the west and northwest sections of Buffalo.
