Early retirement incentives under study for Akron employees
Updated: August 21, 2010, 6:41 AM
Akron plans to explore a local law that would allow it to offer early retirement incentives to eligible village employees.
During a meeting of the Village Board on Monday, Mayor Carl Patterson asked Clerk- Treasurer Daniel Borchert to put together a summary for the board, including who is eligible, when they were hired, salaries and estimated savings.
Borchert said there may be eight village employees who qualify for one or the other of two recently enacted retirement incentives under the New York State and Local Employees Retirement System.
To participate, municipalities have until Aug. 31 to enact a local law, in accordance with the state’s Municipal Home Rule Law and regulations of the state Department of State.
One incentive grants eligible employees one month of service credit for each year of employment as of the retirement date up to a maximum of three years.
The other allows employees age 55 and older with 25 or more years of service to retire without any reduction in benefits.
Eligible employees would have 30 to 90 days to apply for the offer, which cannot extend beyond Dec. 31. There is also a requirement that salaries paid anyone hired to replace a retired employee must reflect a 50 percent cost savings over two years.

The board informally agreed to hold public hearings on three properties it wants cleared of junk. Building Inspector Donnal Folger said the public hearing — after which the board would decide what action to take — is one of three options to get the properties cleaned up.
The other two are taking the property owner to court or billing the property owner for village crews doing the cleanup.
“All three have been taken to court and they have all been granted extensions [on complying with village ordinances],” said Trustee Michael Middaugh, who favors the public hearing. Police Chief Richard Lauricella noted there were several recent break-ins of locked and unlocked sheds at the Akron Mobile Home Park on Bloomingdale Avenue.
“The target apparently was power tools,“ said Lauricella, who advised residents to report any unusual activity to his department.
Public Works Superintendent Robert Kowalik noted that the E. P. Forrestel Water Treatment Plant, 1876 Chick Road, Darien, will be open for tours from 11 a. m. to 2 p. m. Saturday as part of National Water Week. Refreshments will be available.
