Amherst considers delaying downsizing vote

The Amherst supervisor and members of the Town Board are questioning whether to delay a public vote on whether to downsize the board after initially committing to hold a referendum June 15.

Supervisor Barry A. Weinstein had recommended that date for the vote. Holding it then instead of in November would avoid having candidates campaign for the vacant board seat formerly held by Weinstein, only to have the seat immediately abolished if the downsizing proposition is approved.

“If that’s going to cost us $35,000, I’m having second thoughts,” he said of the June 15 date during Monday’s work session. “I had always envisioned the cost of the election being less than the cost of the position we’re abolishing.”

Town Clerk Deborah Bruch Bucki presented three options to the board for the referendum, ranging from $25,000 for four polling places throughout the town to $35,000 for 12 polling places.

Weinstein and board members seemed to agree that if the referendum is held in June, 12 polling places townwide with ample parking would be best.

Bucki also said absentee ballots would be available for the June 15 vote. Postcards would be sent to Amherst voters informing them of polling places.

Weinstein asked all board members to give Bucki feedback soon regarding their desire to hold the referendum in June or November and, if they prefer June, a date and any suggestions for polling places.

The board will hold a special meeting at 4 p. m. Monday to further discuss the matter, following the regular work session at 3.

In other business:

The former Amherst Pepsi Center will temporarily be called the Northtown Auto Sports Centre until the final name is chosen through a contest sponsored by Northtown Automotive Cos.

This is the second temporary name given to the facility. For the first few months of the year, it was called the Amherst Ice Center.

The board agreed to borrow $793,000 to replace the town’s wireless system with a more reliable fiber-optic network. Grants and cost-sharing with the state Department of Transportation and the Sweet Home Central School District may also offset costs for the town.

The board approved a rezoning request for development of a 15-unit apartment complex at the northeast corner of Ellicott Creek and Sweet Home roads.
