Assemblyman Sam Hoyt on Tuesday urged school superintendents in New York State to take a voluntary one-year pay freeze to help school districts reduce layoffs and property tax hikes.

In a letter to the New York State Council of School Superintendents, Hoyt cited a recent Buffalo News story saying that pay hikes for school administrators have far outpaced inflation and are one of the fastest-growing costs for school districts.

Hoyt, a Buffalo Democrat, earlier called for teachers unions to reopen contract negotiations.
