Orchard Park School Board President Donald Sniezak said Tuesday night he hopes to sign a contract with the district’s new superintendent this week.

Negotiations between the board and Matthew McGarrity have produced a three-year agreement, he said. McGarrity will take over as superintendent July 1.

Sniezak said McGarrity will make $167,000 in the first year of the contract. He was introduced as the new superintendent March 3.

“We wanted to stay as close to our current superintendent [salary] as possible,” Sniezak said.

Superintendent Joan Thomas is making $166,000 this year. She is retiring June 30 and will head Holy Angels Academy in Buffalo.

McGarrity is making $138,000 this year leading the Dansville Central School District, which has about 1,700 students. At Orchard Park, he will oversee a budget of nearly $80 million and 5,400 students.

Also Tuesday night, board members learned that the district is hopeful it will receive state aid to relocate the district office to a building on Southwestern Boulevard.

The district wants to buy the Sahlem Roofing property on Southwestern and move its bus garage and district offices there. If the district is able to receive a 75 percent reimbursement to renovate the building to move the district office, the project could be completed with close to no impact on the tax rate, Superintendent for Business Jeff Petrus said.

He said he and district architects made the case to the state Education Department last week. “We are very hopeful we would be able to get the district office portion of this aided,” Petrus said.
