The Orchard Park Town Board plans to discuss Walmart at Wednesday’s work session, but if and when it may act remain uncertain.

The town’s engineer and planning consultant, plus its private consultant, are reviewing the latest report on the environmental impact of the proposed 135,000- square-foot supercenter across Milestrip Road from Quaker Crossing.

Board members must accept or reject the report this month. Accepting the statement does not mean the board agrees with it, only that the report covers all the pertinent issues.

Once the report is accepted, the public will have at least 30 days to make comments before the town issues a final stance on the environmental issues.

The project has drawn comments for months. Critics say not much can be done to mitigate traffic problems and damage to the character of the area.

“This is a bedroom neighborhood. It’s not a commercial zone. That’s what they’re making it,” said Louis L. Boehm, of Lake Avenue. “It’s going to be like a football game every day of the year, especially around Christmas.”

Kathryn Gorkiewicz told the Town Board several months ago that she feared Walmart would abandon the Orchard Park store as it did the one on McKinley Parkway in Hamburg when it built a new store a few miles away.

“Why is a 20-acre location unacceptable in Hamburg but just fine less than five miles away in Orchard Park?” she asked.

She said the proposed store would be just slightly larger than the now-closed Walmart in Hamburg.

“I would be concerned that it would become an underperforming store and eventually be abandoned,” she said.

This is the third time the draft environmental impact statement has been submitted. On the first two occasions, the town deemed it incomplete. If it is found lacking again, the town must provide the developer a list of the deficiencies.

“It’s a matter of the same issues over and over again,” Councilman David Kaczor said, adding that the town would like the document completed so it can go on to the next step of the review process.

The board plans to hear a report at its work session at 6 p. m Wednesday before its regular meeting at 7, Supervisor Janis Colarusso said.
