NIAGARA FALLS — A 22-year-old man who apparently stepped into the middle of a fight between another man and

a woman was fatally shot early this morning outside a Niagara Falls apartment complex, city

police reported.

Lelton C. Kemp, of Lafayette Avenue, was shot once in the chest with a large-caliber handgun shortly after 2 a.m.

outside the Monteagle Ridge apartments on Hyde Park Boulevard, detectives said.

Kemp was taken to Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center, where he was

stabilized before being taken to Erie County Medical Center, but he died en route to the

Buffalo hospital.

Detectives are looking for two men, the shooter and another person involved in the

incident, Capt. William Thompson said, as he described how police believe the shooting took

place.

"It's a result of a fight between one of the suspects and a woman," Thompson said. "[Kemp] got in the middle of it and ended up getting shot."
