Nine Frontier School District teachers and two administrators will retire this year after accepting an incentive in their union contract tied to a longevity clause.

The retirements, effective July 1, were formally accepted last week by the School Board. The longevity incentive was tied to a Jan. 15 resignation notification date, and only full-time teachers who had been with the district for at least 15 years were eligible.

The incentives the district must pay out could range from a minimum of $1,000 for a 15-year employee to as much as $25,500 for a 33-year staffer. The district is in the second year of the longevity incentive in its teacher union contract.

Retiring are Amsdell Middle School Principal M. Kerry Courtney and Athletic Director Timothy Marong, who also is director of health, physical education and recreation; Middle School teachers Sally Armbruster and Karen Simoff Koch; Blasdell Elementary library media specialist Pamela Fechter-Boehler; High School teachers Richard Hartman, Edward Lewis, James Sabuda and George Santoro; Pinehurst Elementary teacher Beverly LaRowe; and Big Tree Elementary teacher Susan Stellrecht.

Superintendent Ronald G. De- Carli said the district, at this point, could not project savings from the incentives.

Courtney, the Middle School principal, now earns $135,104 and has been with the district in different administrative capacities for 26 years, DeCarli said. Marong earns $115,633.

Starting salaries are significantly lower than the salaries of those retiring, most of whom DeCarli said are in the top range of the salary schedule earning at least $80,000.

Next year, a new teacher with a master’s degree step 1 would start at $41,000 a year. A teacher with a bachelor’s degree would make $34,500.
