Zubair Hassan is remembered
Updated: August 21, 2010, 4:36 AM
Aasiya Zubair Hassan, the Orchard Park woman who helped create the Muslim-oriented Bridges TV network and who police believe was beheaded by her husband one year ago, will be remembered by Muslim groups nationwide today on “Purple Hijab Day.”
The day was set aside to remember Zubair Hassan and other victims of domestic violence within the Muslim community, said Aasiya Hadayai Majeed, co-founder of Baitul Salaam Network, a 13-year-old domestic violence organization based in Georgia that works to educate and advocate for domestic violence victims.
Majeed said the national attention given to Zubair Hassan’s murder led to dramatic changes in the way Muslim communities address domestic violence.
“After this happened, a lot of areas where we saw pushback against our effort, the pushback stopped,” Majeed said. “Not even two years ago would we have a major community like the one here in Atlanta hold a major vigil pertaining to domestic violence.”
A lecture and rally will be held today at the main Atlanta mosque. Other events, including poetry readings and prayer vigils, will be held by nine other Muslim-based groups throughout the country, he said.
On Purple Hijab Day, all Muslims are encouraged to wear purple, the international color associated with domestic violence. The hijab is a head scarf worn by many Muslim women as a sign of modesty.
