Region getting only a hint of winter storm to the south
Updated: August 21, 2010, 4:34 AM
Western New York continued to escape the worst of the heavy snowfall that has hit the East over the last week, but rush-hour travel this morning could prove tricky, with a couple of inches of snow expected by this morning.
A winter weather advisory remains in effect through 7 p. m. today for the region except for Niagara and Orleans counties. A 100 percent chance of snow is expected in advisory areas, with accumulations of up to 4 inches, according to the National Weather Service.
The snow began to cover the region late Tuesday afternoon, resulting in several traffic accidents on area roadways during the afternoon rush hour, including a collision at about 4:45 p. m. between a school bus and a car at Memorial Drive and Concord Street.
Two to 4 inches of snow is forecast for areas closest to Lake Ontario, and greater accumulations are expected in areas farther south. In Erie, Genesee and Wyoming counties, 3 to 6 inches of new snow could fall. The Southern Tier counties could see 4 to 8 inches.
