The driver of a stolen car was charged Saturday night with assaulting a Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority police officer who was trying to arrest him.

Lindell Scott, 21, of Strauss Street, slammed a car door into transit officer Charles Loubert and then led transit police officer Adam Brodsky on a chase through the backyards of homes on Laurel, Riley and Eaton streets.

Buffalo police eventually apprehended Scott — dirty and bleeding — on Northampton Street, a few blocks from the Johnnie B. Wiley Amateur Athletic Pavilion at about 9:08 p. m.

When Brodsky asked Scott why his hands were bleeding, Scott replied, “Running from you, and getting caught on those fences,” according to court papers.

When asked by another officer how he got the 2001 Blue Dodge Intrepid, Scott replied, “I was in Kenmore, someone left it running, and I just hopped in,” according to court papers.

Scott told officers he had the car for a couple of weeks and was renting it out for “$300 a pop.”

When Loubert first approached Scott, the officer told him to get out of the car and place his hands on the car. Scott complied, but then he bolted and opened a car door into the officer. Scott ran down Michigan Avenue. The officer, who was hurt, could not chase him.

An ambulance took Loubert to Erie County Medical Center. His condition was not availble.

Scott was charged with assaulting a police officer, unauthorized use of a vehicle, criminal possession of stolen property, obstructing governmental administration, resisting arrest and unlawful possession of marijuana.

The transit police officers first spotted Scott when he made a right turn from Main Street onto East Utica Street at a red light without stopping.
