Newstead wraps up meeting in 15 minutes
Updated: August 21, 2010, 4:21 AM
No resolutions and just handful of motions were adopted Monday by the Newstead Town Board in one of its shortest meetings on record.
An hourlong work session preceded the regular meeting, which lasted about 15 minutes. That left the five-member board waiting about 45 minutes before the Akron Village Board arrived for a joint meeting that included an update on their joint public works facility.
In routine actions, the Town Board renewed the lease for 2010 for Hearts and Hands — Faith in Action Coalition, which rents the main floor of the Newstead Community Center, 50 John St., for $1 a year. The organization pays for utilities, cleaning and general liability insurance.
It also granted the Akron Soccer League use of the Town Park fields for a soccer tournament the first weekend in May at no cost. And it approved the renewal of the liquor license application by the Links at Ivy Ridge on Main Road.
The board also learned that Thomas George, former councilman who is now engineering consultant on the public works complex project, will receive the 2010 Elected Official Award from the New York Chapter Western Branch of the American Public Works Association at a dinner Feb. 11 in Protocol Restaurant in Amherst. George, who did not seek re-election last fall, had served on the Town Board since 1992. He is executive director of the Niagara International Transportation Technology Coalition in Buffalo.
At its work session, the board discussed updated flood maps issued by the Federal Emergency Management Agency. Code Enforcement Officer John Good acknowledged that some homeowners will find themselves now located in a flood plain, which requires purchasing expensive flood insurance if there is a mortgage on the property. He said a public hearing would be held on the revised maps at least a year before they are adopted.
Scott Rybarczyk of Wendel Duchscherer, town engineers, said he would coordinate with the town Building Department to compile a list of residents affected by the changes so they can be notified, as suggested by Supervisor David Cummings.
Good also said a public hearing should be scheduled soon on an order of demolition for the former Blue Inn property on Bloomingdale Road. He said a nearby property owner might be interested in acquiring the site.
