Wales auctioneer gets new chance
Updated: August 21, 2010, 4:05 AM
The Wales Town Board is giving Russ Scherrer another chance.
The board this week voted to allow Scherrer’s Auction International to apply for a new special- use permit for his flea market and auction site on Route 20A, despite revoking his permit earlier this year because of lack of progress and compliance with town codes.
The vote followed the examination of a written review of the site by Building Inspector Walter Raichel. The report showed that Scherrer had moved tons of dirt and leveled the building area site for his garages and parking lots, with new berms in front of the building.
Scherrer has installed the drainage system for the parking lots and selling areas.
Water and septic systems still need to be completed for the main office. The electrical system has been inspected.
Raichel said there was “definite progress on the site, and it has been cleaned up.”
All of these buildings are full of construction material that will be used for Scherrer’s garages. All vehicles except for three have been removed to another location.
Raichel said Scherrer has agreed to permanently remove tractor-trailers and construction trailers used for storage from the property permanently before any certificate of compliance is issued.
Some board members said they still plan to vote against the special-use permit because they do not believe his business is a good fit for the town. But Supervisor Rickey Venditti said, “If he reapplies, we can add more controls this time.”
In other business, the board:
Authorized Venditti to sign contracts with the Boys and Girls Club of Elma, Marilla and Wales for $3,000, the Town of Wales Senior Citizens for $4,283 and Hearts and Hands for $1,000. The town makes an annual donation of $500 to Aurora Adult Day Care Services and $500 to Sgt. Mark Rademacher Post, Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Learned that an audit date for all town departments, town clerk, court clerk, supervisor’s clerk and tax collector has been set for 5 p. m. Jan. 25. All books will be available for review by board members.
Passed a resolution to authorize Venditti to enter into a contract with C. R. A. Infrastructure & Engineering for engineering services at an annual cost of $3,800, the same as in 2009.
Heard a request by Councilman Donald Butcher to study combining the town’s tax collector and town clerk positions.
