A resident representing neighbors unhappy with the noise and odors coming from Lardon Construction Corp. on Lake Avenue wants the Blasdell Village Board to do something about the company.

Sue Bodenstedt, of Martin Avenue, made her request to Mayor Ernest Jewett via a petition with 169 signatures.

According to its Web site, Lardon Construction is a family- owned business specializing in wood byproducts such as wood chips and wood grindings, and produces more than 200,000 yards of material annually.

For much of the last five years that Lardon has been working from Lake Avenue, neighbors have complained about soot, odor and noise, claiming that the processing goes on into the early evening.

In February, the firm added a food scrap recycling and composting bin to its facility, with the eventual goal of producing compost as a high-grade organic fertilizer. That added to the list of neighbors’ complaints, though some modifications have been made to that facet of the business.

Company officials, representatives of the state Department of Environmental Conservation, board members, the village attorney and a few neighbors were scheduled to meet Thursday on the dispute. Details of that meeting were expected to be aired during the board’s next meeting, Dec. 2.

Bodenstedt complained that the meeting with company and village officials is a closed meeting, that more residents are interested in coming and questioned why the event is limited to only a small number of invitees. The mayor said the DEC set “ground rules” for the meeting, one of which was to keep it small and informal.
