Escape attempt brings seven-year sentence
Updated: August 21, 2010, 3:11 AM
Brian Collins, whose ill-fated flight the wrong way out of the downtown lockup last month was caught by TV cameras, was sentenced Wednesday by Senior Erie County Judge Michael L. D’Amico to seven years in prison on attempted escape, prison contraband and a gun charge.
Collins, 24, of Reed Street, faces eventual extradition to Atlanta, where he is accused of robbing a bank after he fled there following his arrest in a Buffalo gun case two years ago.
Buffalo TV cameras were aimed at Collins on Oct. 4 on the roof of the Erie County Holding Center in downtown Buffalo.
During a TV interview last month, Collins said he knew he could not escape from the downtown lockup but held off police and jail deputies for several hours because he wanted to embarrass Erie County Sheriff Timothy Howard and the county administration before surrendering.
Collins on Oct. 20 waived a City Court felony hearing in the escape case.
Despite Collins’ jail roof stunt, Howard won re-election Election Day.
