Voters Tuesday turned down a proposed $47.3 million capital project for the Grand Island School District by a vote of 1,020 to 586.

Superintendent Robert W. Christmann said Tuesday night that the School Board and administrators would sit down soon and discuss what to do following the defeat of a plan that would have made improvements to all the district’s school buildings and athletic fields.

The local share of the project would have amounted to about $2.05 million, thanks to state aid and contributions from the district’s contingency funds. The plan would have cost taxpayers an average of $9.75 annually for the next 15 years for a home valued at $100,000.
