WESTFIELD — Chautauqua County law enforcement officials are considering the possibility that the shooting death of a 25-year-old man over the weekend was accidental, but they haven’t ruled out other possibilities.

Westfield police responded to a call just before 4 a. m. Saturday about a possible shooting on West Pearl Street and found Jonathan D. Calvey wounded. The Westfield Fire Department took him to Westfield Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

“What we’re looking for is the degree of criminal culpability, if any,” District Attorney David W. Foley said Monday. “If you find none, it would have to be considered an accident. But I can’t say that at this time.”

Authorities said the shooting was reported within 15 to 30 minutes after the incident, and they believe a shotgun was used.

Do law enforcement officials know who fired the single shot?

“I’m not going to comment on that at this time,” Foley said. Police have questioned one person in the shooting, but no one has been charged.

While Foley was tight-lipped about the circumstances of the shooting, he and other authorities suggested that it was not a random act.

“I have no reason to believe that the general public is in harm’s way,” he said. “It was an isolated incident, from everything we’ve gathered.”

Westfield police, Chautauqua County sheriff’s detectives and the district attorney’s office are investigating the fatal shooting.
