The Elma Town Board has awarded a certificate of appreciation to John MacIver, a dispatcher for many years in the Jamison Road Fire Company.

MacIver, a Seneca Street resident, has served as a dispatcher for all four town fire departments and is retiring after 35 years of service.

The board also recognized Eagle Scout Randall Gyergyek of Stolle Road, a junior at Iroquois High School and member of Troop 325. His project was refurbishing the statue of Mary at Annunciation Catholic Church, complete with new landscaping and a concrete bench with lighting.

In other matters Wednesday night, the board:

Held public hearings on the proposed 2010 budget and a drainage district at 951 Bowen Road. There were no public comments.

Issued a preliminary permit to Smolarek Funeral Home, 5121 Clinton St., to build a 6,216- square-foot building.
