Closing out the contracts on Phases One and Two of the Depew School District’s capital building project could take six to eight weeks as the project manager and architects work on the final “punch lists” to assure that everything has been satisfactorily completed.

Greg Baker of Ciminelli, project managers, told the Board of Education on Tuesday that Cannon Design “did its final punch list” on those phases.”

Once everything on the punch list has been resolved, the contractors get paid. Baker, meanwhile, assured the board that issues raised by members late last month — including parking lot striping, lighting, signs and fencing — are being addressed. Ciminelli also is developing cost estimates on extra work that some board members asked about, including adding bleachers to athletic areas.

The estimates should be available soon for School Superintendent Kim Mueller and could be on the agenda for the board’s Nov. 17 meeting. Only four of the seven-member board attended Tuesday’s 30- minute meeting, which included action on several personnel matters.

They included appointing Jamie Frerichs to a three-year probationary position, to end Nov. 22, 2012, as an English teacher. She replaces Michael Capuana, who resigned last month to become assistant principal of the middle school at Northtowns Academy in the Town of Tonawanda.

The board also approved the appointment of Kelly Schintzius as girls varsity basketball coach for the winter season.

Heidi Salva, director of instructional services, introduced Lee Hoffman, recently hired for the new position of computer decision support specialist.

Mueller’s recommendation to create a full-time equivalent science teacher position at Depew High School for the remainder of the school year died for lack of a motion. That followed the failure of a motion by member Diane Benczkowski to table the item.

That vote was 3-1, but four votes are needed to move an item. Barbara Staebell, the board’s vice president, and Nancy Fumerelle vote with Benczkowski to table the matter.

David Sheff voted against tabling. Steven Carmina, the board’s president, and members Timothy Schunk and John Spencer were absent.
