LITTLE VALLEY — Cattaraugus County voters will face only one countywide contested race Tuesday as they vote for district attorney. Both sheriff and coroner are uncontested races.

In the City of Olean, Mayor David J. Carucci, Republican-Conservative, faces challenger Linda L. Witte, Democrat-Independence, who is also a county legislator.

While in the City of Salamanca, a primary election last month decided the re-election of Mayor Jeffrey L. Pond Sr., who has Democratic, Republican, Independence and Conservative backing and turned back a challenge from former Mayor Carmen Vecchiarella, also a county legislator.

Both cities will have alderman choices in ward races. In Olean, terms are for two years. In Salamanca, terms will be for three years, for just one term. The change was made to extend terms from two to three years so that terms would expire the same as officials of the Seneca Nation of Indians.

In the county’s 32 towns, only seven will have contested elections for supervisors. Most of the towns also will have choices for other town offices on the ballot.

A summary of those races follows with political parties designated as: Democrat-D, Republican-R, Independence-I, Conservative-C and Working Families-W.

City of Olean Ward 2 alderman: incumbent Michael Kayes, D, I, C, is challenged by Kevin D. Bartholomew, R, Enchanted Mountains Party.

Ward 4 alderman: incumbent Linda Edstrom, R, I, C, is unopposed.

Ward 6 alderman: incumbent Richard C. Smith, R, I, faces Gary P. “Casey” Jones, D, C, a former alderman.

Ward 7 alderman: incumbent Frank L. Steffen Jr., D, I, C, is unopposed.

City of Salamanca

Ward 1 alderman: Ronald S. Ball. D, is unopposed.

Ward 2 alderman: incumbent William J. Ferguson, R, I, C, is challenged a second time by Gerri J. Johnson, D.

Ward 3 alderman: incumbent Roger W. Bailey, D, R, I, C, is unopposed.

Ward 4 alderman: incumbent Michael R. Smith, D, is challenged by Charles F. Coolidge, R.

Ward 5 alderman: incumbent Edward J. Riley, D, R, is unopposed.

In countywide races, Acting Sheriff Timothy S. Whitcomb, D, R, I, C, is unopposed, as is Coroner Kevin M. O’Rourke, D, R, I. Both offices have four-year terms.

In the other countywide race, District Attorney Edward M. Sharkey, D, I, C, faces a challenge from his former first assistant, Lori Rieman, R. Sharkey seeks a fourth four-year term.

Contested races for supervisors will be held in seven towns.

In Allegany, incumbent Patrick H. Eaton Sr., D, I, faces Robert J. Phillips, R, C.

In East Otto, incumbent James A. Beach, R, is challenged by Carol J. Dill, D, I, C.

In Freedom, incumbent Barbara D. George, D, I, C, faces John S. Hill, R. In Humphrey, William C. Timme, D, faces Carrie L. Childs, R. In Napoli, incumbent Lena M. Ruper, D, I, is challenged by John R. Hall, R, C.

In the Town of Salamanca, incumbent Eva M. Ellis, D, faces a challenge from Michael A. Phillips, R.

In South Valley, Colleen K. Kraatz, D, and David G. Nagy, R, face each other.
