It will be business as usual for two of the town’s fire units.

The Clarence Town Board, at its Wednesday meeting, entered into contracts for 2010 with the Harris Hill and Rapids volunteer fire companies. Under the accords, Clarence will pay Harris Hill $715,855, while Rapids, which also receives funding from Lockport and Royalton, will get $40,500.

Clarence has yet to reach agreement with the Clarence Center Volunteer Fire Company.

“We do not have adequate information to make serious decisions,” said Councilman Joseph Weiss. “There are a lot of things we don’t know. I want objectivity in our decision. Clarence Center is asking for $784,400.

“I think your fiduciary responsibilities aren’t there,” Weiss said.

Like Weiss, Clarence Town Supervisor Scott A. Bylewski believes the provision of more information is essential.

“We would be looking for additional studies,” Bylewski said.

The board also agreed to wait for 30 more days before voting to amend the town’s code relative to the time the collection of garbage by private companies can begin. The delay evolved from a concern over the collectors receiving adequate notice.

“The fact is there are four companies that are impacted,“ Weiss said. “How are they going to know about it? A corporation should be notified.”

Not everyone was on the same page as Weiss.

“The residents of the town deserve some peace and quiet in the middle of the night,” said Councilman Bernard J. Kolber.
