Enhancements totaling an estimated $1.8 million will be added to Akron School District’s capital building project, the Board of Education agreed Wednesday.

Because contracts on the $25 million project came in about $3 million under estimates, the district can make additional improvements to the school complex on Bloomingdale Avenue without exceeding the cost figure approved by voters in 2008.

About 24 enhancement projects will be put out to bid in January and February. School Superintendent Robin B. Zymroz said the projects will be “prioritized” and some will be “bid as alternates to allow for flexibility” in case bids on some projects come in higher than estimates prepared by LP Ciminelli, project engineers.

The board also received good news — County Line Stone of Crittenden Road, Akron, is donating an estimated $113,000 in stone to replace the deteriorated stone retaining wall around the gymnasium.

It will come from the same strata of stone used in the original wall, said board President Richard Hegmann. Cost of ripping out the old wall and replacing it with the donated stone is estimated at $199,712.

Other possible enhancements and estimated costs include:

Replacing electrical panels that don’t meet current building code requirements and for which replacement parts are no longer made, $160,000.

Several improvements to the auditorium, including replacing the video/sound system, $107,850; renovating acoustics, $127,000; reupholstering and repainting the seats, $120,000; replacing the lighting system, $159,000; replacing the stage rigging, $154,000; installing new wall and floor coverings and replacing doors, $55,000.

Replacing a second cooling tower behind the high school, $135,000.

Improvements to the Elementary School library, including new shelving, carpeting, lighting and ceiling and computer data/power drops, $125,000.

SmartBoards, or electronic blackboards, for another 12 classrooms, $65,000.

Replace lighting in the Elementary School corridors and classrooms instead of retrofitting existing lights, $70,000.

Replace precast stairs in main entrance to High School and other smaller stairs throughout the complex, $65,000.

Replace High School gym partition wall with divider curtain to meet new safety requirements, $40,000.

Upgrade energy management building control software and upgrade controls for kitchen air unit and connecting Middle School ventilators to new system, $40,000.

Paint High School lockers instead of replacing, $40,000.

Upgrade grounding system for the High School electrical system, $37,000.

Replace message sign on Bloomingdale Avenue with a new LED sign, $35,000.

Plant new trees to replace those lost to the additions, $30,000.

Replace boiler feed-water lines that are deteriorating and cause sporadic boiler shutdowns, $20,000.

Paint existing corridors where new fire alarm/security/ public address/clock systems are to be installed, $15,000.

Replace sidewalks to eliminate tripping hazards, $18,000.

Treat rust on steel supports and cracked plaster on the pedestrian bridge connecting the High School and athletic wing, $10,000.
