A sign of progress in Lackawanna
Updated: August 21, 2010, 2:43 AM
Who put the “Stop” in a Lackawanna street sign? The City of Lackawanna did. And very quickly, at that.
In what has to be a record for Fix It, the worn-out sign, on the corner of Edison Street and Burroughs Avenue, was replaced within an hour of our phone call to the city’s Public Works Department.
The problem was first brought to our attention by residents of Edison Street who were concerned about the sign’s poor condition. One reader felt it was so completely worn out and unreadable that it constituted a safety hazard.
“They’re fixing it as we speak,” Public Works Commissioner Thomas N. Love said Friday.
In another quick fix, the Erie County Public Works Department responded within a week of our Oct. 12 column calling for repairs and restriping of a stretch of road where Dick Road becomes Cayuga Road before the entrance to the Kensington Expressway.
At that time, readers were concerned about a 100-foot stretch of “bumpy” road and the lack of lane markings at the entrance to the Kensington. Because of the unmarked lanes, drivers would often find themselves blocking the entrance to the expressway.
The repairs were begun last Monday and should be complete within a week, weather permitting, according to Erie County Public Works Commissioner Gerard J. Sentz.
“They milled the road and put down the first level of pavement,” Sentz said Friday.
The area will be restriped, he said, but that will be done last.
Fix It has tackled everything from faulty roads to broken public drinking fountains. Readers may submit suggestions three ways: by writing to Fix It, The Buffalo News, One News Plaza, Buffalo, NY 14203; by e-mail at fixit@buffnews.com; or by calling 849-6026. Fix It is not able to respond to every suggestion.
