Where the heck did summer go? The day will be a little raw, by recent comparisons, with a high of only 66 degrees. Not only that, but showers will be a frequent customer on this mostly cloudy day, with winds gusting up to nearly 40 mph. Sunday will be a little better, with a high nearing 70 degrees and a lesser chance of showers, with an occasional peak of sunshine. It'll still be breezy, however. Monday should be grand. Hang onto those wings.

Oh, that beer, sauerkraut and rootin'-tootin' Teutons. Cheektowaga Town Park will be a melting pot of Germanic heritage today and Sunday during the annual Western New York German American Heritage Festival. Features include the Brothers Grimm Kinder Park, including games and bounce house, and a host of contests, for sauerkraut eating, waltzing and Hummel look-alikes. Musical entertainment Saturday features the Bergholz Blaskapelle and the Auslanders, and Sunday, German American Musicians of Buffalo and the Frankfurters. Other specialties of this popular fest include a wine and cheese tent, a smorgasbord of German food and 10 varieties of German beer. Admission is $3 per day, with children 14 and younger admitted free. Kinder Park day passes are available for $3. The festival, sponsored by the Federation of German American Societies of Greater Buffalo-Niagara, continues from 1 to 10 p.m. each day.

The weather might not be so hot today, but it's sure that the fare at the 2010 National Buffalo Wing Festival will be. The two-day festival, which kicks off at noon today in Coca Cola Field, is an ode to the humble chicken wing, which will be celebrated with live entertainment and, of course, tons of chicken wings.

At 1 p.m., there will be the 5K Running of the Chickens contest. That will be followed at 1:30 p.m. with the Amateur Creative Sauce-Off featuring competitors from as far away as Kansas City, Mo., who will have just 15 minutes to whip up their sauces to see which of their creations will reign supreme in the stadium kitchen.

At 2 p.m., the Amateur Traditional Sauce-Off will follow, and Buffalo Wing Eating with Joey Chestnut will follow that. Yancey's Fancy Cheesiest Couple Semifinals is set to start at 4 p.m., followed by the Amateur Wing Eating Championship at 5 p.m. and Buffalo Buffet Competitive Eating Contest at 6 p.m.

The Buffalo Blue Cheese Bowl kicks off at 7 o'clock, followed by a concert performance by Eric "Badlands" Booker at 8. The wing fest resumes at noon Sunday.

The Clarence Center Volunteer Fire Company will hold its annual, weekend-long Labor Day Fair, which kicks off today at 9415 Clarence Center Road. The fair is one of the oldest continuing festivals of its kind in the area and features amusement rides, exhibits, food and live entertainment, including a Labatt Blue Party Tent from 1 to 5 p.m. and a free demolition derby at 5 p.m. The fair continues on Sunday.

Ruth Ward, no doubt, will be 100 years tuckered out by the end of today's extensive birthday festivities for her, including including a morning worship service, afternoon dinner, vespers and an evening jubilee. The celebration will be based in Emmanuel Temple Seventh-day Adventist Church, 300 Adams St., where she has been active for more than half of her years, as a Bible instructor, Sabbath school teacher, deaconess, community service worker and a staffer at the church's food bank. Five generations will be on hand to bestow honors.

Country superstars Montgomery Gentry - the duo of Troy Gentry and partner Eddie Montgomery - will appear at 8 p.m. in the Seneca Niagara Events Center, Seneca Niagara Casino, Niagara Falls. The two are an apropos booking for the Labor Day celebration. "We've always been consistent about choosing songs that deal with the working class, songs people can identify with," Gentry says. Hispanic music, food and more are the staples of the 20th annual Hispanic Music Festival, which continues through Sunday in LaSalle Park. Musical acts include the international merengue group La Neuva Patrulla Quince, from Puerto Rico, on Sunday. Admission is $5 per day.

Hamburg's Memorial Park, Lake and Union streets, is currently a make-believe cemetery, complete with headstones. The grave markers provide the setting for "The Cemetery Club," a dark comedy about widows who meet monthly to mourn their husbands. The unusual stage setting is for this year's production by Hamburg Theatre Under the Stars, which is following up on its successful 2009 debut offering, "Picnic." Showtime is 7 p.m. today and 2 p.m. Sunday. Admission is free.

"Homegrown tomatoes, home grown tomatoes; what'd life be without homegrown tomatoes; there's only two things that money can't buy; that's true love and homegrown tomatoes." Recording artist Guy Clark's musings on the juicy red orbs are grist for some farmers market stalking today. A good start is the Elmwood-Bidwell market, featuring more than 30 vendors of fruits, veggies, baked goods and fresh meats. Hours are 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.
