Good morning, Buffalo
A quick look at what's happening today
Updated: September 2, 2010, 11:38 PM
Soak up the heat while you can. Once those showers come through this afternoon, the National Weather Service tells us, that 80-degree midday temperature is going down to 70 by sunset and into the 50s by Saturday morning. There's supposed to be a strong breeze, as well, which should feel good while it's still warm, but probably will send you reaching for a jacket or sweatshirt later on.
What can we expect for the Buffalo Wing Festival on Saturday? An even stiffer wind than today, forecasters say, and highs only in the low 60s. There may even be a couple thunderstorms during the afternoon. The wind and the chilly temperatures are likely to continue into Sunday, but the skies are supposed to start clearing up as the day progresses. High should be in the upper 60s.
Best day of the holiday weekend? That would be Monday. The outlook is for sunshine and highs in the low to mid 70s. Next hot gorgeous summer day in the forecast is the day everybody has to go back to work -- Tuesday.

It's the final day on the job for Erie County Attorney Cheryl A. Green, who's leaving to work for a downtown Buffalo law firm and run for State Supreme Court. In her 28 months in office, she kept a high profile as she spearheaded County Executive Chris Collins' battles with the County Legislature, Comptroller Mark C. Poloncarz and the county's state-appointed fiscal control board. The one we'll all remember her for, though, is the recent tug of war with the U.S. Justice Department over conditions in the county jails.

Fairgoers got a preview of the new $25.4 million Hamburg Casino at the Fairgrounds during the Erie County Fair three weeks ago, but the official grand opening is this weekend. It's 33 percent larger than the old one under the grandstand and features several dining choices, a big stage for live entertainment and lots more video gaming machines. As part of the celebration today through Monday, there's a long list of promotions and giveaways. Grand prize -- a 2011 Ford Mustang.

You don't have to be a kid to love "Yo Gabba Gabba," the children's TV show on the Nickelodeon Channel. Its bright colors, its retro style and especially its music draw in fans of many ages. Today, the touring version of the show -- "Yo Gabba Gabba Live! There's a Party in My City" -- comes to Artpark in Lewiston for performances at 2 and 5 p.m. with DJ Lance Rock and, as celebrity guest, rapper Biz Markie, who will show kids how to be a beat box with "Biz's Beat of the Day." Tickets are $39, and there's no lawn seating.

The trio Rascal Flatts is one of the biggest country acts of the past decade, rocketing six albums up the charts and drawing enormous crowds to its live performances, which are heavy on videos, pyrotechnics and lasers. Its current outing, the Nothing Like This Tour, is leading up to the release of a new CD of the same name in November. They come to Darien Lake Performing Arts Center for an evening that begins at 7 with sets by two famous talent show competitors -- former "American Idol" finalist Kellie Pickler and Chris Young, who won the 2006 "Nashville Star" title.

The big story tonight as high school football season starts is the brand new field at Buffalo's Riverside High School. It features new lights, artificial turf, new bleachers and a high-tech press box that's built into a new wing of the school overlooking the field. The opening game also sees Riverside breaking with tradition by taking on Niagara Falls High School. It's the first time in history that a Buffalo school has played a public school from outside the district.

There were fireworks galore Thursday at Fan Appreciation Night at Coca-Coca Field as the Bisons played their final home game of the season, but the home team's bats weren't included. The Herd watched visiting Scranton Wilkes-Barre run up a big lead before they finally were able to avert a shutout in the bottom of the ninth. The loss officially shut them out of the International League wild card race and dropped them into third place in the Northern Division, behind Syracuse. They finish the season with four games on the road, starting tonight against Lehigh Valley. First pitch in Allentown, Pa., is at 7:05 p.m. Listen on WWKB 1520 AM.
