A Sudanese refugee facing possible deportation was sentenced Wednesday to 10 years in prison for terrorizing his estranged wife and continuing to be “a threat to her.”

Jackson Shol was found guilty July 15 of both burglary and criminal contempt in the June 9, 2009, attack on his estranged wife in the bedroom of her Prospect Avenue home.

During the sentencing, Shol — speaking through an Arabic interpreter — told the judge he would prefer to be sent immediately back to his homeland.

Shol was convicted of a 2006 knife attack on his estranged wife, also a Sudanese refugee, and a 2007 assault in which he choked her.

Erie County Judge Thomas P. Franczyk pointed to the testimony of the victim, who said that during the June 2009 attack, Shol threatened her with a metal pipe and vowed to kill her once he got out of jail.

The judge also issued an order of protection, barring Shol from contacting his wife, his children or a male witness in the case for the next 18 years.

Trial prosecutors Kristin A. St. Mary and Kristen M. Walder said the couple married in Sudan in 2002 and moved to the United States in 2006 after living in Egypt for four years.

The victim and her five children, all younger than 7 and four of whom were fathered by Shol, are currently living in a domestic violence shelter, court officials said.
