Co-lateral damage

As if Bud Adams flipping the bird to the Bills’ sideline Sunday wasn’t insulting enough, we noticed something else in the video of this notorious incident.

Just below the luxury box where the Titans owner was making his hand gestures was the name of a player inducted into the team’s Ring of Honor: Frank Wycheck.

As in, the guy who made a supposed lateral that led to a touchdown in the “Music City Miracle.”

Hey, at least Adams admitted what he did was wrong.

Dogged security

Travelers using the Buffalo airport during this busy holiday season will soon find out that the passenger screening system has gone to the dogs.

A sharp-eyed tipster recently noted the federal inspectors are using dog bowls to hold travelers’ keys, change and other items as they pass through the X-ray scanners at the airport.

Spokesman Brett O’Neil confirmed the plastic dog bowls replaced the smaller, noncanine bowls when the renovated checkpoint area at the airport opened in January.

The dog bowls are larger, they have a wider base, and the rubber on their bottom makes them less likely to slip on the conveyer belt, O’Neil said.

“Who notices mostly are the kids. They laugh at it. They make comments,” he told us.

The airport buys the bowls from a federally approved contractor for just under $6 each, O’Neil said—kibble not included.

Diaper dandies

We knew there was a lot riding on the outcome of the Section VI Class B championship soccer game between Grover Cleveland and City Honors.

We just didn’t know that two of the things were dryness and comfort.

The schools’ principals, both of whom became fathers in September, wagered a box of diapers on the outcome of the game, which Grover won, 3-1.

City Honors Principal William Kresse made good on the bet this week when he dropped off a 130-pack of Pampers to Grover Cleveland’s Casey Young.

“I was hoping for a bigger box,” Young said after taking possession of the booty, adding: “These will come in handy in the days to come.”

Grover has advanced all the way to the state Final Four in soccer and is scheduled to play Central Moriches of Long Island this morning.

Strike 3 in Blasdell?

Downsizing the Town Board passed overwhelmingly Tuesday in Hamburg, with yes votes outpacing no votes from every polling place but one: Blasdell, where it was defeated by one vote.

Blasdell historically has given downsizing ideas a cool reception. Earlier this year, residents voted against studying the idea of dissolving the village.

A year earlier, when Kevin Gaughan spoke in Blasdell about his smaller-government initiative, Mayor Ernest Jewett barred him from talking about dissolution.

Jewett may have been prescient. Gaughan said after the vote that he does plan to use his success at getting votes for downsizing as leverage in votes to eliminate villages.

Fewell calls a reverse

Call it the power of positive thinking. Or maybe just wishful thinking.

Bills interim head coach Perry Fewell faced the cameras Wednesday for his first media day since taking over the team from Dick Jauron. Fewell was asked how confident he is of rookie Andy Levitre starting Sunday at left tackle in place of injured Demetrius Bell.

“He’s not young anymore. We’re six and three. He’s played nine games in the National Football League. So he’s got experience,” Fewell said.

No one had the heart to tell Fewell the team’s record is actually a dismal 3-6.

Perhaps he was thinking ahead to this time next year.
