WARSAW – The large barn of Ronald Franklin Jr. at 3115 Route 78 in the Town of Wethersfield was destroyed, along with a large quantity of hay, and small number of animals were killed in a fire that began about 7:45 p.m. Friday and kept eight fire companies and other agencies at work for about 10 hours, the Wyoming County Office of Emergency Services reported Tuesday.

The cold temperatures caused fire hoses to freeze and slippery road conditions hampered firefighters at the scene and at three tanker fill sites used. One firefighter was taken to Wyoming County Community Health System for treatment of smoke inhalation and a second firefighter was treated at the scene for an arm injury.

With Bliss Fire Chief Clarence George in command, crews from the Bliss, Arcade, Gainesville, North Java, Strykersville, Castile, Pike and Varysburg fire companies worked the fire with assistance of crews from Wyoming County Emergency Services, Wyoming County Sheriff’s Office, the Wyoming County Correctional Facility, National Grid, the Town of Wethersfield, the state Department of Transportation and Java Excavating. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
