How tough a winter was it? Just ask emergency road service technicians from the AAA of Western and Central New York.

Their calls were up more than 22 percent from last year across upstate New York, thanks to the snow and bitter cold, Tony Spade, regional AAA president and chief executive officer, announced Wednesday.

In the Buffalo Niagara region, AAA answered calls from 61,686 motorists, up from last winter’s 50,420, Spade reported. Of the calls, 34 percent were for towing, 26 percent were for battery-related problems and 13 percent were for flat tires.
